  1. I got the exact same email a couple of days ago. I decided to play along and asked for $400 to be sent which was the cost of furniture. I got another email 2 days later, saying the bank had messed up and the check was being sent for $2900 instead of $400. I was asked to deduct the cost of furniture plus an additional $100 as the cost of my running around. Then wire the remaining money to his moving person using a Western Union money transfer. Apparently he had already told the mover that the excess money was to be used to offset previous pending payments. I didn’t respond to the 2nd email and got a follow-up email yesterday saying that he is worried and needs to hear from ASAP regarding the transaction and whether “I could be trusted” to transfer excess funds to the mover!!! I decided to stop playing along at this point, since it wasn’t worth wasting any more time on this crap, so I sent him this link and said that a little google search told me what you are up to.. haven’t heard back since..

    • BEWARE, they send a fake check that will be returned by your bank. After you wire the funds they request, your bank holds her liable for the insufficient funds caused by the return check and the scammers make off with the money you already wired. This is a common scam done by mail, email and text. I investigated this with my bank when my fiance received a 4600 check in the mail once. Always use cash or epay for online sales. Even with cash, spend a couple dollars to buy a counterfeit pen to check the cash. $20 bills are common fakes.

    • This guy did the same to me using the name Jack Rockly then sent a check from a law firm which looked real. But he wanted me to pay a “mover” to get the stuff to him so he gave me a bigger check for the moving amount. The mover was an individual in Illinois. It’s a scam!! He will make you send money to him before the check clears. Don’t do it!!!!

  7. Unfortunately, I got scammed by this same guy. I was fresh to this selling on craigslist. And thought great somebody wants to buy my camera. I actually received a fake email from paypal saying the deposit would be in my account within 24-48 hours. Expensive lesson learned. There are some very unscrupulous ppl out there.

  16. I applied for a receptionist job in Burbank and below is what I received. Him or Her askiing for my credit report is what made me suspicious. I just ignored the jerk:

You recently sent us a job application via our posting on Craigslist. We’re happy to inform you that after reading through your application, we want to bring you in for a meeting and discuss the position in-depth. This will be a group session, with our hiring manager present, and four other candidates.

First, we ask that you verify the information you sent via your application by obtaining a credit report. This is in keeping with our company policy and standard procedure for any new hires we make. Be advised that a bad credit history does NOT hurt your chances for the position, and is simply to protect the company against possible issues in the future.

Click here to receive your report. Once this step of the process has been completed, we will AUTOMATICALLY be notified that you are ready for the meeting. We are looking to get started in the next week or so, and it is imperative we move forward as quickly as possible. Please, DO NOT include any sensitive information in any emails. Please perform this step quickly, as we would like to fill the position very soon. Simply complete this step and I or Mr.Baker, our HR manager, will get back to you to set up a meeting.

We appreciate your interest in our company and we look forward to seeing you soon,

  23. 1/8/13 Just got the same thing. He is using Jack Rockly. So thankful for your postings, I would have never known!!

    Hello ,

How are you doing? I want you to understand that the deal is on,my
secretary as posted the payment promptly, but there was a little
problem which I guess we can handle with care while she just notified
me that the payment as been sent out to you,but instead of the actual
amount she made out the check for $2800, She claimed that was what I
requested for but she didn’t get me right.

The payment has already been posted before I was informed, I wouldn’t
want this to delay the sale as I have just rectified it with my Bank.
All you have to do once you have the payment is to take it to your
Bank, have it cashed and deduct the money for your good plus an
additional $100 for the stress,I have put you through during the
course of this transaction as well as for your running around.

The excess fund on the payment will then be wired to my mover via
Western Union that same day so that he can come for pick up as I
already plan on using the excess on the payment to offset the cost of
the various shipments they have undertaken on my behalf. Do let me
know if I can count on you to send the excess to my mover and I’m
sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you. Thanks

  24. Well, Jack, the Rockly, is still up to no good. I received the same emails this morning regarding a tv I just listed on craigslist. The first email asked if the item was in good condition and still available, the second about sending a check…same as the previously mentioned emails. Sounded fishy from the get go. Thank goodness for google. I did send him an address back, though. I told him to please send the check to (our local police department). Haven’t heard back from him!

  25. In downsizing over the last two years preparing to move into a much smaller home, I have used CL to liquidate much of the extra in my home.

I constantly have around 10-12 items on CL.

I tried to use a paste and copied opening statement for each item. However, the CL program recognizes that as a duplicate item.

I have also noticed that these scammers are getting better each week. They are studying us and finding methods to convince us that we must do what they say.

A true CL buyer wants a deal and I have found that nine our of ten times, they attempt to negotiate your listed price.

THE SCAMMER relieves you of that misery. He is willing to pay full price plus handling costs. I could probably write a book.

Quick checks I use to qualify a buyer.
    1. email matches or resembles persons name
    2. they provide some personal info (buying for daughter etc…)
    3. They provide a phone number on the first reply
    4. I google their name, their email address, and any other pertinent info. I do this just for the sake of security as well. I want to know who is buying from me.
    5. You can find most real buyers on facebook. If you use facebook, log in and at the very top of your screen is a search bar. enter the individuals email address. I estimate that 80% of my good purchasers and nice people have had a facebook account.
    6. After getting their full name, I will also check facebook to learn something about them

sounds like a lot of effort doesn’t it? It is not. It actually saves much time in eliminating no shows, bidders, price shoppers, etc..

The point is Jack Rockly also replied to my furniture listing. I hit the CL scam button.

  26. Just an addendum to my previous post…I listed 3 items for a family member on craigslist and ebay classifieds yesterday. The emails I received this morning were from “Jack Rockly”. About an hour ago, my family member received a text message on his phone (it was on the listing) from someone who says he’s in Florida and wants one of the items, but can’t come personally to inspect the item because he has a sick wife so for him to give him his paypal information and he will send the money immediately and make arangements for shipping. My brother-in-law texted him back saying that he doesn’t have a paypal account and that he wants a certified check. The scammer responded by saying how safe and secure paypal is and he will basically only do it that way! So “Sellers Beware”! If it sounds fishy, it is! The number the text came from is 904-274-2383.

“Dear Jack, or is it Mike?
Lucky for us our items sold last night, we have however forwarded your information to the e-crimes unit of our police department. Perhaps you can send your “mover” there.”

Hopefully we won’t “hear” from him again. Lol!

Note that some of the restrictions relate to eBay.com (the U.S. site), while other restrictions apply to specific European sites (such as Nazi paraphernalia). Regional laws and regulations may apply to the seller or the buyer. Generally, if the sale or ownership of an item is regulated or prohibited by one or more states, eBay will not permit its listing. ‘:
